PFAS Treatment - LEEF System®

Our patented PFAS treatment technology, known as the LEEF System® (Low Energy Evaporative Fractionation), can treat PFAS from complex wastewater sources down to the limits of detection, with minimal waste and low energy consumption. We are global first in treating leachate at full-scale. We can remove PFAS from complex wastewaters, without the need for pre-treatment, such as:

  • Landfill leachate
  • Municipal sewage
  • Contaminated groundwater
  • Industrial wastewater

PFAS is a complex and global problem. Historical use of PFAS has seen increased levels at airports, Defence sites, firefighting training sites, industrial sites, effluent outfalls, and landfill sites

The Water & Carbon Group team have invested into research and development of a cost-effective solution to remove PFAS. Our patented technology is customisable, has low operating costs, and is often the only technology capable of cost- effective removal, particularly when compared to traditional removal methods, such as adsorption.

PFAS is the common term used for both per-fluoroalkyl and poly-fluoroalkyl compounds – thousands of manufactured chemicals that have been in production since the 1950s for use in items for waterproofing and stain-resistant coatings, cosmetics, and fire-fighting foams. PFAS compounds do not easily break down, and it is these properties that make it not only useful but also potentially dangerous to humans and the environment.

Biological

Our process engineers are leaders in biological treatment technologies where we design, build and operate solutions in:

  • Landfill leachate
  • Municipal sewage
  • Contaminated groundwater
  • Industrial wastewater
  • Mining waste

Our biological solutions typically include:

  • SBR (Sequence Batch Reactor)
  • MBBR (Moving Bed Bio Reactor)
  • Trickling Filters (Fixed and random pack media)

Biological wastewater treatment is a method that utilises microorganisms to degrade organic and inorganic compounds in water effluent, either aerobically or anaerobically. This method provides an environmentally friendly and cost-effective treatment process commonly used in wastewater applications with high organic content. The advantages of biological systems are their size, energy inputs and treatment efficiency in relation to their throughput capacity.

Biological systems are safe, operationally sustainable and use very small to no amounts of chemicals compared to mainstream wastewater treatment systems. There is also a high level of resistance in the process which can be adapted to treat a wide range of influent streams.

Media & Membrane Solutions

We continuously explore the global market for innovative specialty products that have viable applications in the water and wastewater sectors. Our process engineers have expertise in:

  • Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)
  • Ion Exchange membranes
  • MBR
  • Reverse Osmosis
  • Trickling filter media

These solutions can be used to treat sewage, complex wastewater (eg. leachate) and contaminated groundwater.

Natural Capital

Our ecological engineering team works with our process engineers to integrate low-energy, green solutions for wastewater treatment.

Our natural capital solutions include:

  • Treatment wetlands
  • Biodiverse reforestation
  • Wastewater reuse
  • Riparian restoration
  • Stormwater treatment
