Logan City Council: A Decade of Revegetation

Since 2012, we have delivered projects and collaborated with Logan City Council (Queensland, Australia) across various projects of scale and requirement, providing value to both the Council and the local community.

The projects delivered include reforestation, riparian connectivity, and vegetation offsets, mostly within agricultural landscapes.

Ecological Restoration & Vegetation Offsets

Sebring Park Vegetation Offsets

2023-2030 | 3ha | $353K

Sebring Park, near Jimboomba adjoining the Logan River, serves as a vital vegetation offset site. Over 6000 plants were planted to restore the riparian forest. The park will be managed by WCG until 2030.

Joadie Park and Teak Park Vegetation Offsets

2019-2023 | 8ha | $442K

Joadie Park and Teak Park have been important vegetation offset projects for Logan City Council, contributing to the ecological restoration of the area.

Vegetation Offsets – Battle Park, Bethania Shores Park, Moffat Park & South Quarter Park

2019-2023 | 9ha | $427K

Our team delivered Bethania Shores Park as a riparian offset planting on the Logan River. The South Quarter Park offset enhanced a floodplain wetland adjoining the Logan River and the Moffat Park offset is a Melaleuca irbyana targeted planting adjoining a remnant Swamp Tea-Tree community.

Logan River Riparian Restoration & Melaleuca Irbyana Offsets

2013-2018 | 12ha | $269K

Five sites were revegetated, with a Melaleuca irbyana, ‘Critically Endangered’ Swamp Tea- Tree community project delivered as a Queensland State Government offset project.

Riparian & Floodplain Restoration

Albert River Riparian Restoration Project

2023-2025 | 0.3ha | $70K

Our team delivered riparian restoration and mangrove rehabilitation adjoining an urban park. They also provided training activities as part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program.

Logan River Riparian Restoration Projects

2014-2018 & 2020-2024 | 4ha | $376K

A project to manage risks adjoining vegetation offset sites, which included extensive weed management. Enhancement planting has reinstated biodiverse riparian zones that will increase the resilience of the sites to future flood impacts.

Slacks Creek Restoration Project

2013-2018 | 25ha | $1.6M

A partnership between WCG, Logan City Council, Griffith University, and CSIRO. Slacks Creek traverses through diverse environments, including highly urbanised and degraded zones. The project included the Shailer Pioneer Park constructed stormwater wetland and targeted reforestation across six sites to increase both terrestrial and hydrological connectivity in Slacks Creek.

Windaroo Flying Fox Buffer

2019 – 2020 | 1,700m2 | $40K

The team rehabilitated almost 1,700m² of degraded riparian zone within Noyer Park and Mt Warren Oval, Windaroo.

Riverdale Park Reforestation and Bush Food Forest

2013-2018 | 8ha

Riverdale Park, nestled alongside Slacks Creek and Logan River, underwent restoration to revive its degraded vegetation. The northern section, significant to Jagera Daran Traditional Owners, now hosts restored open forest, riparian, and swamp forest communities. Engaging with Jagera Daran, our team established a bush food forest with traditional Aboriginal food plants to foster community connection and cultural awareness.

Effluent Irrigated Forests

Cedar Grove Wastewater Treatment

2015 | 152ha | $50K

Our team designed a treated effluent disposal strategy for the growing Cedar Grove sewage treatment plant. A parcel of land was purchased by Logan City Council, creating the opportunity to design a 126-hectare biodiversity forest, with the aim of dry weather discharge to the Logan River. Additionally, 26 hectares of constructed wetlands were incorporated into the design to act as a naturalisation and final polishing step in the sewage treatment process.

Stormwater Wetlands

Shailer Pioneer Park Stormwater Wetlands & Environmental Precinct

2014 | 9ha

Part of the Slacks Creek Restoration Project, a stormwater wetland was designed and constructed to improve the quality of water runoff from the Centenary Creek catchment. The project involved integrating strong multi-purpose functionality into the design and included features such as a boardwalk over the wetland and an open grassed park area. Since completion, the project has developed into a high-value environmental precinct for the community.

Rainforest Restoration

Bahrs Scrub Lowland Subtropical Rainforest

2018 – 2023 | 9ha | $240K

The Belivah Creek area is rich in biological diversity and contains relics of the Critically Endangered Lowland Subtropical Rainforest community. Our project focused on weed eradication and high-density plantings to assist with protecting rainforest remnants and to enhance the sites biodiversity and resilience to flood events. The aim was also to improve biodiversity and increase the ecological connectivity of Lowland Subtropical Rainforest along the Windaroo Creek catchment. This initiative improved water quality in the Albert River and the visual amenity for park users.

Creating a lasting positive impact on the environment.
